Description
Small, broad, relatively fast growing evergreen tree, conifer (H 5-8 m, W 2-3 m). Crown broadly conical, dense, regular; top characteristically drooping. Young shoots thin, slightly drooping. Bark red-brown, it peels off decoratively in narrow strips. Needles scalelike (0,2-0,4 cm), smooth, glossy, variegated, young needles yellow to green-yellow, later dark green. Male and female flowers separate, on the same plant, monoecious plant; male inflorescence (2-3 mm) pink-red, female cone-shaped inflorescence blue-green. Flowering period: April-May. Fruits woody cones (0,8 cm), round, dark brown. Requires deep, moderately moist, nutrient-rich soils, and sunny to half-shady sites. Easily withstands occasional drought, cold, heat, wind and urban conditoins.
