Description
Large, upright, fast growing evergreen tree, conifer (H 35-50 m, W 8-12 m). Bark dark grey, smooth, later black-grey, deeply fissured. Crown conical, at maturity broadly conical. Branches wide open to horizontal. Needles solitary, straight (2-3 cm), narrow, flat, soft, dark green, with two lighter bands beneath; scent of fruit and resine when crushed. Fruits elongate cones (5-10 cm), light brown; bract scales have a trident tip and protrude characteristically, being longer than seed scales. Requires deep, moist soils. Easily withstands drought and snow.
