Description
Large, upright evergreen tree, conifer (H 12-20 m, W 6-8 m). Bark dark violet-brown to grey-brown, flaky. Crown broadly conical, often irregular, picturesque. Branches open to horizontal. Young shoots green-brown. Buds egg-shaped. Needles (4-6 cm) spiraly twisted, pointed, in fives, outer side green to grey-green, inner side light blue-grey to grey-white. Flowers separately arranged in male and female inflorescence on the same plant. Flowering period: April. Fruits cones (4-7 cm), egg-shaped, dark grey to red-brown, scales wide. Requires sufficiently drained, but always moist soils.
