Description
Medium-sized, bushy, broad, deciduous tree (H 8-14 m, W 5-7 m). Leaves large (8-20 cm), broadly ovate to heart-shaped, eventually palmately lobed (3-5 leaflets), rough, light green. Male and female flowers separate, light green, tiny. Plants can be either monoecious (male and female flowers on the same plant) or dioecious (male and female flowers on separate plants). It is usually better to plant male trees only, to avoid problems with fruits. Fruits fleshy, elongate cylindric to egg-shaped (2-3 cm), resembling raspberries, white, light pink, pink-red to dark violet-red, sweet and tasty, good for fresh use, cooking and making jams. Attracts birds and insects. Requires sunny, warm, sheltered positions and sufficiently drained, poor, calcareous soils.
