Description
Small, slow growing, upright evergreen tree, conifer (H 3-5 m, W 2-3 m). Bark brown-grey, rough. Crown conical to broadly ovoid. Branches open to horizontal. Young shoots green with dense orange-brown hairs. Buds egg-shaped. Needles (6-12 cm) pointed, in fives, glossy, outer side dark green, inner side grey-blue to green-blue. Flowers separately arranged in male and female inflorescence on the same plant. Flowering period: April. Fruits cones (9-16 cm), elongate, at first green or dark violet, ripe brown, seeds edible. Requires dry, sufficiently drained soils.
