Japanese barberry "Golden Carpet"

Berberis thunbergii "Golden Carpet"
Description
Small, broadly growing, evergreen shrub (H 0,4-0,5 m, W 0,5-0,7 m). Branches widely spreading, arching, dense, thorny. Leaves broadly ovate to egg-shaped (2-3 cm), with entire margin, bright yellow, in summer green-yellow; autumn colour orange to red. Flowers in numerous dense inflorescence, yellow to red, strongly scented. Flowering period: May. Fruits ovate (0,8 cm), fleshy, glossy, bright light red. Ripening time: October-November, fruits persist on the branches long into winter. Attracts butterflies, bees and birds. Undemanding shrub, it grows well in different soil-types, also in poor, dry, sandy soils; in distinctly sunny to slightly shady sites. Easily withstands cold, heat, drought, urban conditions and pruning.
Sunny shady position

Plants for partial shade need a few hours of direct sun per day to grow and blossom properly, thus could suffer harm from direct sun heat or overlong sun exposure. It is important for the plant not to be exposed to afternoon heat and in early afternoon hours, but must be exposed to morning, forenoon and evening sun. Partial shadow position can mean a site that is sunny one part of the day, or a site with sun and shade in patches, as it is the case under broadlived trees or behind a picket fence - wooden boards with spaces in between.

Conifer deciduous tree with plant

Decidious have woody stems (i. e. tree trunk and branches) and are also called woody plants or trees. Leaves are normally broad, soft and thin.

Deciduous evergreen plant partially true

The plant develops new leaves or needles every spring, which dropp off in autumn. Herbaceous plants can die completely in above ground section and grow back in the spring.

Presumed strength

Plant can in otherwise appropriate environment survive cold down to - 23 °C.

Soil humidity

Porous or dry soils are normally light and loose, there is no stagnant water but relatively quickly flows in deeper layers; such ground are more airy and warmer, yet drier and usually contain less humus and for such undergrowth it is often to for drought to appear (e. g. rockgardens, walls, by paths and roads, on gravel, also on gravel surface in towns and close to buildings ...), plants of such undergrowth need well-drained soil, they tolerate drought but cannot tolerate constant moisture or even flooding.

Growth shape

Woody plant, normally branched at the ground level into several side stems, usually lacks of a dominant stem. Tree top can be of different shapes, dense or thin, symetric or uneven. Most shrubs reach a height of 1 to 2 metres, but some can grow much higher (up to 8 m); some can grow into very low or carpet-like forms.

Durability R
Among described plants in this category we marked those, which are particulary resistant (to various environmental conditions), do not require much maintanance and thereby suitable fot planting in public areas.
Autumn colorfulness
Leaves or needles of many deciduos plants change colour in autumn before falling mostly to yellow, orange and red shades. Distinctive autumn red or similar colouration may also appear in some evergreen plants, which leaves/needels do not fall off in autumn. Autumn coloration depends on general condition of a plant, maintanance, weather and site. Usually leaves colour more intensely if dry autumn and if differences between day and night temperatures are greater, as well as on dry, sandy soils with less nitrogen. Among grown ornamental plants there are numerous varieties with especially intense or diverse autumn colour than by the basic species.
