Description
Large, dense, upright evergreen shrub or a small tree (H 3-4 m, W 2-3 m). Branches partly upright, later horizontal, eventually slightly hanging. Leaves ovate to broadly ovate (5-10 cm), leathery, smooth, with an entire or slightly spiny margin, glossy, variegated, margin dark green, toward center light green, with a large, irregular yellow spot in center. Only female flowers, unremarkable, white, tiny. Fruits globose (5-8 mm), fleshy, smooth, glossy bright red, autumn and winter attraction. Ripening time: September-October. Attracts birds. Needs a sheltered position. Ilex × altaclerensis is a cross I. aquifolium x Ilex perado.
