Description
Large, dense, upright evergreen shrub or a small tree (H 3-6 m, W 1,5-2 m), crown narrowly pyramidal. Branches partly upright, later horizontal, eventually slightly hanging, bark dark olive green, on older branches grey. Leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate (4-7 cm), leathery, smooth, with a spiny margin, glossy, dark green. Mostly or only female flowers, unremarkable, needs a polinator for producing fruits. Fruits globose (4-6 mm), fleshy, smooth, glossy bright red, autumn and winter attraction. Ripening time: September-October. Attracts birds. Needs a sheltered position. The variety is a cross between Ilex aquifolium and I. pernyi.
