Description
Large, dense, upright evergreen shrub or a small tree (H 4-7 m, W 3-4 m), crown pyramidal or egg-shaped. Branches partly upright, later horizontal, eventually slightly hanging, bark dark olive green, on older branches grey. Leaves ovate to broadly lanceolate (5-10 cm), leathery, smooth, with a spiny (or entire) edge, glossy, dark green. Flowers unremarkable, white, tiny; male and female flowers different, (most often) on separated plants, dioecious. Fruits globose (4-6 mm), fleshy, smooth, glossy bright red, autumn and winter attraction. Ripening time: September-October. Attracts birds. Needs a sheltered position.
