Description
Large, fast growing, upright evergreen tree, conifer (H 20-30 m, W 5-8 m). Bark grey-black to orange-brown, roughly flaky and fissured, ornamental. Crown at first conical to egg-shaped, later broad, irregular, flattened. Branches open to horizontal. Young shoots upright, green to light orange-brown. Buds conicaly egg-shaped, dark brown-red, resinous. Needles (6-18 cm) firm, straight to slightly bent, stiff, prominent, pointed, in pairs, very dark green. Flowers separately arranged in male and female inflorescence on the same plant. Flowering period: April. Fruits cones (4-12 cm), elongate egg-shaped, light grey-brown to grey-yellow. Requires dry, sufficiently drained soils. Three different taxons: P. nigra var. nigra, P. nigra var. caramanica, P. nigra var. pallasiana.
