National titles: Abyssinian banana "Maurelli"
Latin names: Musa ensete "Maurelli" Ensete ventricosum "Maurelli"
Description
Large, upright, fast growing, frost tolerant, evergreen perennial (H 3-4 m, W 2-3 m). Stem dark brown-red. Leaves with long petioles, ovate (0,7-1,2 m) slightly lobed, dark green, underneath dark red to dark brown-red. Flowers in smaller inflorescence, light yellow. Fruits green, inedible. It grows well in fertile, deep, light, always moderately moist, well-drained soils, in sheltered, warm sites. Not hardy in central-european continental climate, best grown as a container-plant.
Sunny shady position

These plants grow well in sun or in partial shade. Usually they tolerate more sun and heat if given enough moisture; in partial or light shade they need less moisture.

Conifer deciduous tree with plant

Herbaceous plants are not woody. Their stems are soft, usually remaining green. With some herabceous older stems may harden and look like woody stems (e. g. bamboo).

Deciduous evergreen plant partially true

Leaves or needles remain on the plant for several consecutive years, usually 2 to 5 years. Our descriptions contain the word evergreen.

Presumed strength

Plant can in otherwise appropriate environment survive cold down to - 6 °C.

Soil humidity

Moist soil usually contain morefine clay parts and less sand, more humus and organic materials, they are somewhat heavier, but not hard; water does not run away quickly but stays among soil particles and is long available to plants. There is no stagnant water, soil is airy enough. Drought occurs rarely on such positions. Plants are given more or less permanent, moderate moisture.

Edibility of fruits

Fruits of these plants are not edible for humans, so are not to be consumed. They may have important ornamental value or provide food for some wild animals (e. g. singing birds). Regarding edibility and/or healing power we are not liable, in this matter seek for professional guidance before consumation or usage.

Growth shape

Herbaceous, not woody plant. Stems and leaves may be evergreen or deciduous - thus regrowing every spring. Perennials may blossom consecutively for several years. Some perennials develop special underground organs - bulbs, corms or rootstocks and these species are treated separetelly, not with geophyte and tuberous plants.
